Top 10 most popular crossbreed dogs

Dog breeds are constantly changing but the past few years have seen a new phenomenon in the rise of crossbreeds, that is, dogs who have two purebred parents of different breeds.

Crossbreed dogs are quickly overtaking traditional breeds in popularity as dog owners seek out the pawfect companion for them. So which crossbreeds are the most popular pooches on the block? We’ve dug into the data and found the most popular crossbreeds in the UK.

Cockapoo

The playful Cockapoo is a favourite amongst dog owners. A cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, they come in three sizes (depending on the size of the poodle parents), Standard, Miniature and Toy. They inherit their parents’ intelligence and energy, as well as a curly, silky coat that can have hypoallergenic qualities.

Sprocker Spaniel

Sprocker Spaniels are a cross between the two most popular Spaniel breeds, Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels. The Sprocker Spaniel may seem like a new crossbreed, but it actually goes back to the days when Springer and Cocker Spaniels were chosen from the same litters based on their size. Sprocker Spaniels often inherit their parents’ high work drive and energy and make fantastic working and agility dogs.

Labradoodle

The Labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador and a Poodle. Whilst most breeders will use a Standard Poodle to match the Labrador’s size, some may use Miniature or Toy Poodles, resulting in a smaller dog. Labradoodles combine the family friendliness of the Labrador with the intelligence and low shedding coat of the Poodle, resulting in a dog that is perfect for mild allergy sufferers who want a family dog. Not only that, but they also make great assistance dogs and are routinely bred for this purpose by professional organisations.

Goldendoodle

Much like the Labradoodle, the Goldendoodle is a perfect family pet for those with allergies. This time, a Poodle is crossed with a Golden Retriever, resulting in a dog who is a playful, intelligent companion. They inherit a golden curly coat that can have hypoallergenic properties and love their family to bits.

Cavachon

A Cavachon is a small-sized crossbreed whose parents are a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Bichon Frise. They retain their puppy-like appearance well into adulthood and love to spend time with their owners, whether curled up on the sofa or out playing in the garden. Cavachons often inherit a hypoallergenic coat from the Bichon Frise parent and tend to stay relatively small, making them good options for people living in flats or smaller homes.

Springador

The Springador is a cross between two popular pooches, the Springer Spaniel and Labrador Retriever. Also known as the Spanador or the Labradinger, these pups grow fairly large, often taking after their Labrador parent and are often a solid colour. Both parents have their origins in retrieving, so the Springador makes an excellent working dog as well as a loyal family companion.

Puggle

A Puggle is a cross between a Pug and a Beagle, resulting in a small- to medium-sized pooch who loves to play and enjoys plenty of belly rubs. The two very different parent breeds mean that your Puggle’s personality could vary wildly. Many inherit a stubborn streak from their independent Beagle parent, but the gentle Pug nature often tempers this trait. Both Pugs and Beagles love a snack, so make sure you watch their weight. Cavapoo

The Cavapoo is a seriously cute pooch who maintains a real puppy-like appearance well into adulthood. They are the cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. They have wonderful temperaments and low shedding coats, making them great companion and family dogs, especially for those with allergies. They are intelligent and playful little dogs who are very kid-friendly.

Sprollie

Sprollies are seriously energetic and clever pooches. They are a crossbreed of a Border Collie and Springer Spaniel, inheriting a strong desire to work along with plenty of energy. These dogs are particularly popular as agility dogs thanks to their desire to please and strong connection with their owner. Sprollies are usually a medium size, with markings common to either Collies or Springers and with fluffy ears typical of the Springer parent.

Jackapoo

Last but not least is the humble Jackapoo. A cross between the spunky Jack Russell Terrier and the clever Poodle, Jackapoos are sprightly and happy little pooches. Whilst they may inherit some stubbornness from their Jack Russell parent, they also get the Poodle smarts, making them easy to train and a great dog for canine sports. They inherit a hypoallergenic coat that is sometimes wiry depending on the individual dog.

As with any dog, crossbreeds make the best companions when they get plenty of training, socialisation, and exercise. With PitPat, we can recommend exercise goals for hundreds of dogs, including all of the crossbreeds listed here (and many more), so you know how much exercise they should be getting, which you can then track with a PitPat Dog Activity Monitor. Or why not upgrade to a PitPat Dog GPS Tracker so you can also know that’ll be able to find them should they ever run off.
